One of the things the Florida Keys are best known for is being home to the last living coral reef in North America! The reef offers visitors the opportunity to explore a beautiful and diverse underwater environment that is unlike any other. During your visit to the Florida Keys, you’ll want to set aside the time to explore one or more of the local diving and snorkeling sites and see the reef for yourself.

The tropical waters of the Florida Keys are typically warm and peaceful, making for perfect visibility while diving or snorkeling the area. On the water, you’ll have the chance to encounter a range of colorful fish and other marine species, including angelfish, parrotfish, and nurse sharks!

A popular spot for diving in the Florida Keys is the USS Spiegel Grove, a 510-foot navy ship that was sank to a depth of about 130 feet to create an artificial reef habitat. The ship is now home to a diverse array of marine life and is the perfect place to glimpse the underwater world surrounding the Florida Keys!

One of the top-rated locales for snorkeling is John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. The park encompasses over 70 nautical square miles in the Upper Keys, and there are a variety of means for visitors to explore the surrounding waters, whether by snorkeling, kayak, paddle board, or jet ski.

Another great option for snorkeling is to book a charter out of Robbie’s Marina in Islamorada. From there, you’ll head a short distance offshore to Alligator Reef, a historic lighthouse that sits atop a crescent-shaped reef.
