MARATHON, Florida Keys — Visitors to and through Marathon can delight in a whopping five new eateries, stacking the selections for a Middle Keys munch-a-thon to suit taste buds and budgets. Sunset Grille & Raw Bar, aptly named for its horizon-gazing location at the foot of the Seven Mile Bridge, boasts a full-service restaurant, tiki bar and pool for outdoor and oceanfront dining. Highlights include a Caribbean atmosphere, largely seafood lunch and dinner menus, raw and steam bar replete with crab, clams and oysters, and opportunities for diners to grill their own catch each Wednesday. Popular “Sunday Funday” shrimp boils, clam bakes and barbecue parties with live nightly entertainment keep the pace hopping. Seating is first-come, first-served. Located at 7 Knights Key Blvd. at mile marker (MM) 47, the restaurant is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for lunch and 5-10 p.m. for dinner.
Reservations are recommended at the new Lazy Days South, Marathon’s version of Chef Lupe Ledesma’s Islamorada oceanside eatery Lazy Days. Keeping relaxed, family-style “cook your own catch” dining alive, Chef Lupe favors food that is fresh and cooked to order. Fresh banana bread, served as soon as diners are seated, is a tableside signature. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. (10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays) Lazy Days South is located at 725 11th St. at MM 47.3. For reservations, call 305-289-0839.
Fat Buoyz Pub & Grille is a biker bar–casual eatery whose motto is “All-American fare on an All-American road.” The “wild game” menu tempts travelers with buffalo burgers, sausage samplers, alligator tail, frog legs and seafood samplers. Motorists and motorcyclists — Monday is biker night — can stop by for a cold one beside the 7 Mile Marina at MM 47.5. Fat Buoys is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and 11 a.m. to midnight Thursday through Saturday.
For those seeking a quick bite between sightseeing stops or mouthwatering fare for a day on the water, two fabulous pizza and deli stops are on track with finger food budgets. Driftwood Pizza & Subs and Laurie’s Deli are located at or near MM 53. Driftwood Pizza & Subs offers fresh-from-scratch pies to order, along with chicken wings, ribs and salads, mainly to go. Find it at 10875 Overseas Highway and call ahead to order at 305-743-8770. The savory spot is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. (11 p.m. on weekends). Laurie’s Deli is a happening, locals-love-it breakfast, lunch and late-night sandwich snack shop. Daily specials on quality veggie or top-grade deli meat subs and freshly made cold salads maintain Laurie’s reputation as the best-kept secret in Marathon. Laurie’s is located at 11090 Overseas Highway. Eat in or call 305-743-2000 to order.
