Definition of "Historic"

The Historic Tavernier Hotel was built in 1928, the centerpiece of the commercial district of Tavernier, as a hotel and “Tea Room”. Once the shopping mecca envisioned and built by H.S. “Mac” McKenzie. McKenzie moved to Tavernier from Miami with the original Standard Oil man, O.M. Woods. Initially, the hotel was built as a theater, in anticipation of entertaining the WWI veterans building the highway. Since the theater was not successful, it was converted to the hotel. Through the hurricane of 1935 and WWII, the Tavernier Inn Hotel, served in many capacities. The concrete-block Tavernier Hotel was used by the Red Cross after the 1935 hurricane devastated the Upper Keys. The building has been preserved on the exterior and interior as it was in 1928. Hence, you will notice among many things, narrowed doors, and of course, smaller sizes in comparison to hotels built today.
The Tavernier Tea Room, is now the office and registration/reception area for the Tavernier Hotel and KeysCaribbean Resorts and Marinas. The small cottage was also the Standard Oil gas station.
In keeping with the Historic building, we have not deviated from the original structure. We have, however, added, guest friendly amenities, pillow-top mattresses, flat panel televisions with cable, and free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, a courtyard for our guests to relax. We have available on request, blow dryers, irons, ironing boards, and incidentals you may have forgotten.
We are not a “brand” hotel, nor do we want to be. We are unique with a rich history in the Florida Keys. The Café Moka has joined our complex, offering various roasted coffees, French pastries and sandwiches.
We will be continuing to add features without detracting from the original building and rooms.
We hope you will return to see us change, yet keep our part of “historic” world.
