The fifth annual Keys 100 feature three ultra-marathon road races – an individual 50-mile, individual 100-mile and a 100-mile team relay – between Key Largo and Smathers Beach, Key West. Proceeds benefit the Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys.

Presented by Friends of the Key Largo Cultural Center, visitors are welcome to participate in the new Ocean Life Lecture Series; topics include Coral Spawning in the Florida Keys (March 16); Sea Turtles (April 20); Coral Reefs & Human Systems (May 18); World Oceans Day (June 8); Florida Everglades (July 20). Meet-and-greet- reception is at 6 p.m., lecture begins at 7 p.m. Tickets $10 per adult, students are free. Held at the theater inside the Murray E. Nelson Cultural Center, MM 102.

Islamorada / May 24
This month, the Art Walk is moved to the fourth Thursday, for some very special guests; the Morada Way Arts & Cultural District features national and local artisans who are showcased in galleries at Morada Way between mile marker 81 and 82, as well as “culinary art” and live music from 6-10 p.m. Free admission.

Paradise Quilters to Showcase at Marathon Community Theatre
Original artwork by members of the Paradise Quilters will be on display at Marathon Community Theatre in conjunction with the playhouse’s presentation of “Forever Plaid” from May 24 thru June 3. Paradise Quilters, with over 70 members from the Middle Keys to Key West, is dedicated to the quilting arts. The group holds a semi-annual quilt show as a major fundraiser. This event enables the group to bring nationally known teachers to The Keys to introduce local quilters to new techniques and stimulate creativity. Much of that creativity will be on show at the Marathon Community Theatre for this exhibit.

Marathon / May 24 – June 3
This goofy musical revue centers on four singers killed in a car crash in the 1950s on their way to their first big concert, and they’re fulfilling their dreams posthumously. Anyone purchasing two tickets to a play on any Thursday, other than opening night, will receive $5 off the price of the two tickets. Both tickets must be purchased and paid for in one transaction. What happens when you trade houses with total strangers and think you’ve discovered a murder plot? A producer of TV crime shows exchanges her Manhattan apartment with a couple from England. Once in the English cottage, she and her brother (her traveling companion) grow suspicious that something is about to happen to the British husband. A suspenseful comedy in the mold of ‘Deathtrap’ but with a bit of ‘Rear Window’ thrown in for fun. Showtime 8 p.m.

Key West / March 17 – November 30
More than 40 species of fish are targeted during these months, with divisions for men, women, junior anglers (ages 10 to 14) and Pee Wees (under 10 years old). In a March kickoff event, anglers target 15 species and $5,000 in cash prizes is split between the top anglers.

Key West / May 17 – 20
A tribute to Jose Marti, Cuba’s foremost patriot and poet, and a celebration of Cuba’s 1902 independence from Spain is to be scheduled at the San Carlos Institute, a not-for-profit Cuban heritage center and museum, where Marti launched the final drive for Cuba’s independence in 1892. Marti so loved the San Carlos that he called it “La Casa Cuba.” Events tickets also available at keystix.com.

Key West’s political history is highlighted in panel discussions, a reception and tours of the Little White House where Truman spent many working vacations during his presidency.
Key West / May 25 – 28
The Southernmost Car Show is presented by the FCPOA (First Class Petty Officer Association) Naval Air Station, Key West. This is an annual benefit Car Show & Festival Weekend that commemorates the birth of the U.S. Navy (Oct. 13, 1775). This year honors the 237th birthday of the Navy with many activities surrounding the car show on Sunday, May 27. Free and open to the public.

Key West / May 26
11th Annual Yamaha Dolphin Masters Invitational
Headquartered at Key West’s Historic Seaport, competitors vie for first-place honors and more than $13,000 awaits the angler scoring the highest total combined weight of three dolphin catches. Other prizes include four-night tropical fishing vacation for four, among many more. The tournament is open to all anglers, entry fee is $750 per boat. There is no limit on the number of boats that can register.
